Here's an interesting post... http://www.boundlessline.org/2009/04/why-books.html
2 Tim 4:13 When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments.
-> Here Paul is asking Timothy to visit him soon. Paul is a reader right to the end. one of the things that will encourage him are books!
Acts 8: 30 So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
-> Here Philip is being led to meet the eunuch. This passage clearly shows that we need people (and i must say GOOD people) to guide us into truths. There is nothing wrong reading commentaries and reference guides just to understand God's word and His world deeper.
Acts 17: 28
for “‘In him we live and move and have our being’; [1]
as even some of your own poets have said,
“‘For we are indeed his offspring.’ [2]
Footnotes
[1] 17:28 Probably from Epimenides of Crete
[2] 17:28 From Aratus's poem “Phainomena”
-> Paul quoted a popular poem of his time and it ended up in the Word of God! At least, this shows that Paul reads widely and is able to preach using popular medium of his time!
So conclusio? Read!
